  1. What is sleep apnea?
    Is a condition in which a person temporarily stops breathing when you sleep.

  2. Are there many types of sleep apnea?
    What are they? Yes they are divided into 3 classifications, Obstructive, Central and Mixed Apnea.

  3. What is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)?
    OSA is a condition in which the upper airway collapses frequently throughout the night, causing breathing to stop.

  4. What are the symptoms to look out for to determine if I have sleep apnea?
    Common symptoms includes: snoring, choking, gasping, waking frequently during the night, having trouble concentration during the day.

  5. Do you know how many people have sleep apnea?
    According to statistics 4% of men and 2% of women have sleep apnea.

  6. Is sleep apnea a common illness?
    Sleep apnea is considered to 6-7% of the total population, in Indonesia the prevalence rate of OSA is 10,519,982 based on the population of 238,452,952

  7. What is sleep apnea got to do with snoring?
    Snoring is one of the symptoms of Sleep Apnea.Snoring indicated partial blocking of the upper airways.

  8. If I snore, is it dangerous?
    Depends on the diagnosis
    Do I have to get it checked if I snore?
    Person may need to undergo sleep test to identify the gravity of snoring and to check whether there is an underlying illness connected to it.

  9. If I suspect a person may have sleep apnea, what should I do?
    Patient should under go sleep screening or sleep test.  During the test, patient would be monitored and diagnosed to decide what is the best treatment

  10. Is it dangerous if I have sleep apnea?
    OSA can cause serious problems, affecting the quality of life due to the disrupted sleeping patterns. OSA can lead to increased risk for heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure. It can also increase the risk of motor vehicle and work related accidents.

  11. How do I know if I have sleep apnea?
    People with OSA often feel very sleepy during the day.They may suffer from morning headaches, feel depressed or irritable, and experience memory lost or sexual dysfunction.

  12. What are the characteristics of a person that is at risk to having sleep apnea?
    same as the answer on #11. others include overweight and abnormal anatomical structures of the upper airway.

  13. If my husband has had a stroke, does that mean that he has sleep apnea?
    It is a proven fact that there is direct correlation of OSA and stroke.

  14. If I have sleep apnea, and I’m overweight, will losing weight cure this illness?
    This is possible, since extra tissues within the airways may cause obstruction, however people who has sleep apnea often feel lethargic to carry out their activities of daily living.

  15. What should I do if I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea? –
    OSA can be treated depending to severity.CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) Machine has been considered as the cornerstone of treating ISA.

  16. If I don’t treat it, what can happen?
    OSA can lead to several morbidity of illness.

  17. What is the solution to treat sleep apnea?
    Depending on the severity, there are a spectrum of treatment from body positions, oral appliance, surgery or the golden standard of treatment which is CPAP.

  18. If my husband / wife snores loudly, does that mean we need to use CPAP?
    It is recommended that they under go a sleep test

  22. How do I use a CPAP? –
    Continuous Positive Airway Pressure introduces pressure that acts like a pneumatic splint in opening the airways.

  23. Are there medications that need to be taken together whilst using CPAP?
    Medications are often prescribes to other sleeping disorders not frequently with OSA.

  24. Do I have to use CPAP every night?
    Yes, compliance is required to make the treatment more effective.

  25. How long do I have to use a CPAP?
    Depends on the diagnosis

  26. Do you guarantee that the CPAP equipment is effective?
    It’s a case to case basis, but this has been the gold standard of treatment.

  27. How big is the equipment?
    Small and convenient

  28. Can I not buy the humidifier?
    Yes, depending on how compliant the patient in using the machine.

  29. What is the voltage of the CPAP?
    Autovolt – can range from 100-230V whatever is available. It can also run using a car battery(Optional)

  30. How much is the CPAP equipment?

  31. What are the features included in a CPAP?
    Basic features are ramp but algorithms comes in different packages

  32. How do I know if I have improved after using CPAP?
    One indication is the quality of sleep, or downloading the compliance data from the cpap units.

    Not with the tyco cpaps, most users change only the accessories like mask and tubings.

  39. How long do I need to change the spare part of the equipment?
    Depends on handling the equipment

  45. Do I have to stay overnight to test if I have sleep apnea?
    Diagnosis comes in different packages, depending on the prescribing doctor. It may be Full night Diagnosis or Split nights.

  46. Does the sleep center handle other sleep disorders?
    Yes, there are more than 80 types of sleeping disorders
    Or just snore disorders?
    OSA is the most common disorder that is left undiagnosed and untreated.

  47. If I have insomnia / sleeptalk, can I use CPAP?
    Need to have the sleep test first.
